25 June 2026 – BARNSTABLE, MA – As summer spreads across Cape Cod, this year’s cohort of AmeriCorps members are on the trails, working with partner organizations like Barnstable Land Trust to maintain and support the region’s natural resources … but just one year ago, the beloved program teetered on the brink.
“Last year was a tough year for AmeriCorps,” said Misty Niemeyer, program manager for AmerCorps Cape Cod.
Did AmeriCorps Cape Cod survive?
But, contrary to the perception of some, AmeriCorp survived. One year after a multi-state lawsuit returned federal funding to AmeriCorps Cape Cod, the service program is on its way to full restoration, making both immediate impact and feeding the Cape’s workforce pipeline as well.
What happened to AmeriCorps funding?
In January 2025 federally funded program went into a tail spin as the presidentially-selected Department of Government Efficiently (DOGE) began slashing programs. In April 2025, AmeriCorps Cape Cod had its grants suspended.
The Barnstable County government jumped in and provided an operational umbrella and funding to keep the program running.
Multiple states, including Massachusetts, sued the federal government for illegal termination of grants and in June 2025 the court ordered the termination reversed and AmeriCorps Cape Cod returned to its status as a federal program, locally led by Barnstable County.
What happened over the next year to AmeriCorps Cape Cod?
“The grant was reinstated in June, so the funding was made available and we had enough funds to finish out the year as an AmeriCorps program,” said Niemeyer.
The start to the 2026 year was also a bit dicey, she said. Literally the day before the federal government shut down in September 2025, the current grant came through.
The funded cohort was small and the work started a month later than normal, but the center held – and it ended up being exceptionally visible. During the blizzard, the cohort played a key role in keeping the emergency shelter open and functioning.
What is the service program’s current status?
That group is now about the complete the program . Selection for the 2027 cohort is in progress and Niemeyer says she hope it will be back to full strength, along with a three-year grant to build stability.
What does AmeriCorps mean for Cape Cod?
The service year members make immediate impact on conservation work, environmental education and emergency planning, working with municipalities and nonprofits. Plus, the program serves as a workforce pipeline, bringing young people to the Cape.
Niemeyer said more than 50 people currently working in municipalities or nonprofits stand proud as Americorp alumni.
“I don’t think a lot people realize, they might not know about Americorps, they may not know the details of what we do, but their lives have been impacted in a positive way, or they benefited from work that Americorps members have done over they years, “ said Niemeyer. “So it is built into the fabric here.”
