28 September 2026 – HYANNIS, MA – The weekend nor’easter’s winds and heavy rains may have dampened outdoor plans for Cape Cod Doxie Day – but couldn’t stop it.
This 18th annual running of the doxies – with a little help from Cape Cod Beer – pivoted to an indoor venue combined an outside tented area for the ever-popular Doxie Dash.
What is Cape Cod Doxie Day?
“It is a celebration of doxies and the people who love them,” said Eva Carbonaro, President, Cape Cod Doxie Day.
Promptly at noon, a platoon of short furry legs, long snoots, and bright button eyes barked into sight at Cape Cod Beer’s Hyannis brewery, human parents in tow. Both humans and canines were looking to celebrate all things dachshund.
Where to people come from for Doxie Day?
Doxie Day draws breed enthusiasts from Cape Cod – and beyond.
“The owners, they come from around the country … people will start emailing us after this event saying where can we stay next year, what can we do that’s pet friendly on cape cod,” said Carbonaro.
“So it really, to me, it brings our community into focus, where people are making this a destination to enjoy and discover with their dogs.”
What was the costume contest?
These meme-ready pups inspire a plethora of creativity in expression. During the costume contest (the parade was a bit condensed due to the storm!) both humans and their pint sized pals strutted their stuff in pun-filled wiener word play get-ups.
The John Deere tractor logo changed from a deer to a doxie, as it carried an overalls-and-plaid-attired duo of dogs. The “hot dog stand” included a wiener dog dressed as a food wiener in bun, with its humans as the three condiments and stand proprietor.
What else happened at Doxie Day?
With a nod and wink to the cult of doxin, people could acquire doxie cookies, t-shirts, carry bags, and much more themed merch. A doxie themed raffle offered even more.
It gives them a chance to meet and mingle with other doxin enthusiasts,” said Carbonaro “And it also gives back to the community.”
What charity does Doxie Day support?
Sales benefited Cape Cod Disaster Animal Response team (DART), a small nonprofit that helps emergency shelters accept pets and runs Red’s Pet Pantry, a food pantry focused on animal needs.
What is the Doxie Dash?
And of course, there’s the highly anticipated Doxie Dash. Picture a low slung – doxie height – horse race starting gate with five long canine snoots sniffing out. The gates go up, the pup race to their humans at the end of “track.”
Well, mostly.
Being curious scent focused dogs, some of the pups took alternative paths to greet the cheering humans along the way; one even hopped over the track boundary for a little deeper sniff exploration. But that’s ok, because that’s part of what makes a doxie, well, a doxie.
“You just need to look at them to know who special they are, said Carbonaro. They are a little dog that packs a big personality into a sausage shaped body. What’s not to love about that?”
