We have a robust shuttle bus operation because most of our lots are remote. It’s one effort we can do to have a direct impact on the neighborhoods we operate in.

What is special about the new shuttles?

24 July 2024 – HYANNIS, MA – As the Nantucket Ferry’s horn bellowed in the background, the Steamship Authority held up giant ceremonial scissors in front of one of its two new hybrid shuttle buses and took one more step toward its carbon neutral goals.

During the ceremony at the Authority’s Hyannis ferry dock, Steamship Authority General Manager Robert Davis reiterated that this latest fleet addition represented part of a process that began in 2019.

“Our bus fleet consists of 28 buses, seven of these are fully electric and now these two hybrids,” he said.

Why change the shuttle buses?

The new hybrid buses shuttle steamship guests from parking lots through sometimes congested streets, while minimizing exhaust and road sounds. Their shorter wheel bases enable them to maneuver through crowded parking lots and streets, while running quietly and without spewing diesel fumes into the humid summer air.

“As part of our capital budget request to our board, staff proposed to the board to start transitioning our bus fleet to alternative fuels,  electric or hybrid. the goal is to be replacing a minimum of two buses each year,” added Davis. “And it not just isolated to our buses; the Woods Hole Terminal is being rebuilt and when that it done it will be net zero energy.”
