25 September 2026 – SANDWICH, MA – Like other towns on the Cape, Sandwich says that keeping up with election tech makes the process smoother for voters and poll worker alike.
What are towns using to run elections?
Several towns recently introduced new election tools–including ballot machines, tabulator software and paperless check-in devices–in pursuit of a smoother election process. According to local officials, these improvements aim to benefit voters and poll workers alike.
“It makes it easier for the voter and it makes it easier for us on the backend to make sure everything is processed accurately and correctly and timely,” Sandwich Town Clerk Taylor White said.
What did Sandwich do during the primary election?
White is in perfect position to see the impact of new polling tech. During this September’s primary election, the Town of Sandwich rolled out its new fleet of ImageCast ballot machines, which were funded through the town’s Capital Improvement Budget last fiscal year.
“They’re not terribly dissimilar from the machines people in Sandwich have used over the last 15 or 16 years,” White said, referencing the ballot machines Sandwich introduced around 2010.
What does ImageCast do?
In total, Sandwich purchased eight ImageCast ballot machines: one for each of the town’s six precincts and two reserves. White says the new devices provide greater functionality compared to their predecessors and include a display screen that alerts voters to issues with their ballot. For example, if a voter overvotes for a certain race or question, the display screen will alert the voter to issue before officially accepting the ballot.
“Basically, these machines are gonna be used here in Sandwich probably for the next 15-20 years,” White said.
How much time does a tabulator save?
In addition to the ballot machines, Sandwich also invested in “high-speed tabulator software in a machine.”
“It is a huge time saver,” White said. “We used that machine for the first time in the primary. What would’ve taken us 6-8 hours took about two.”
According to White, the new ballot machines and high-speed tabulator software effectively brings voting technology “up to modern standards.” The town previously introduced a paperless poll pad voter check-in system several years ago.
When is early voting?
Sandwich will put its new polling devices to work once again next month. Early in-person voting for the upcoming midterm election begins on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Center for Active Living and continues until Friday, Oct. 30 everyday except Sundays.
Sandwich voter registration closes on Saturday, Oct. 24 and Election Day follows on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Polls open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at two sites: Corpus Christi Parish Hall for voters in Precincts 1, 2 and 3 and the Center for Active Living for voters in Precincts 4, 5 and 6.
