17 March 2026 – CAPE COD, MA – Although rising temperatures melted away most of the snow brought by February’s massive blizzard, many Cape Codders continue to deal with the aftermath of the storm.

More than three weeks later, chainsaws continue to roar throughout the region as clean-up crews and residents work to remove fallen trees, broken branches and other displaced brush.

How bad is the debris?

In response to the significant amount of natural debris left by the blizzard, several towns announced measures to assist with residential clean-up.
“I think most people would equate it to the tornado that came through a few years ago,” said Alex Provos, Brewster Director of Public Works.

“Some towns really got whalloped by the tornado, some were clipped just by the weather. [It’s] similar, but I think that the damage and the debris that we’ve seen from this blizzard exceeds the tornado by a lot.”

What are towns accepting?

As of March 17, eight municipalities, including Truro, Eastham, Orleans, Brewster, Chatham, Yarmouth, Sandwich and Falmouth, confirmed temporary storm debris drop-off programs for town residents.

Yarmouth concluded its collection period on March 17, but residents of the other seven communities may dispose of storm-related debris until late March or early April, depending on their town’s program.

How much debris is there?

“As of now, [Brewster has] collected 300 tons-plus, you know, maybe two thousand yards,” Provos said on March 17.

“It’s an extraordinary amount from my perspective and I think that goes across Cape too, you know. Just seeing other towns and hearing about it and what they’re taking in and getting rid of. It’s very widespread.”
